Guess the clues, designated A, B, C, etc., and write them into the numbered boxes alongside. Next, transfer each letter in the clue to the square in the headline grid with the same number. Black squares indicate word endings. As you proceed you will be able to guess words in the headline and transfer letters back to the corresponding squares in the clues.
The completed puzzle WILL READ AS A NEWSPAPER HEADLINE ABOUT AN EVENT THAT TOOK PLACE IN THE YEAR INDICATED.
Tips
- You're not going to know all the clues right off, but don't panic. Knowing just a few of the clues will give you a good start at solving the puzzle.
- Begin by entering the answers to clues that you're reasonably sure of and transfer the letters to the headline.
- Now try to guess some of the words in the headline. Write in the missing letters and transfer them back to the same-numbered clues below. These additional letters will help you answer the clues.
- Work back and forth this way until the puzzle is completed.
- If letters don't spell out a word in the headline grid, an answer to a clue is probably wrong.
- Notations to the clues:
(3 wds) This notation after a clue means that the answer consists of three separate words. These clue words will run together without spacing. For example, THETHREEBEARS.
The same (3 wds) applies to the name of a person. (e.g. GEORGEBERNARDSHAW)
(hyph) This means that the answer will be a hyphenated word, but without spacing. For example, NOHITTER.
- Always pay attention to the word endings of the clues. For example:
If the clue is a verb ending in "ing", chances are that the answer will end in "ING".
If the clue is a verb ending in the past tense "ed," the answer will generally end in "ED".
If the clue is a plural, the answer will usually end with an "s".
You can try writing these endings into the final boxes in the clue even before you've answered the clue, and transfer it to the proper squares in the headline.
- Pay careful attention to the wording of the clue. For example, if the clue is "DeNiro or Redford," the answer will be "ROBERT"... but if the clue is "DeNiro and Redford," the answer will be "ROBERTS."
- There is no punctuation in the body of the puzzle except for a hyphen (which would be seen in a square). "JOHN'S" would appear "JOHNS," "IT'S" would appear "ITS," etc.
